With the holiday season upon us one of the main things we all focus on is giving gifts. In my family, we only give gifts to children because it just gets too expensive otherwise. And this evidently leads us, and other parents and grandparents, running around trying to purchase toys, games, and lord know what else.
However, while most children secretly want the latest must-have gadgets, dolls and games there is one item which is surely the best of all gifts.
Books should be included in all gift packages and stockings. Books have a worth that goes far beyond those first few moments of unwrapping because reading can take children to worlds they may never travel to. They can learn about people, places, and events outside of their own experience
And, while books might not get the initial attention of flashing toys that speak or zooming cars or glitter-covered fairies, they can inspire the imagination like no other gift can.
A Book Offers Limitless Experiences
Children can learn about people, places, and events outside of their own experience. Reading can take them to worlds they may never travel to. They can learn about tribes in deepest, darkest Peru where little bears come from. They can learn how the explorers of freezing Antarctica kept warm, and they can go on fantastic journeys with wizards, dogs and more.
Books can also take children on emotional and intellectual journeys. They can learn what they can do if they feel unhappy or depressed; what to do if their grandparents are sick, or even where their little siblings came from!
E-Books Make Great Gifts
Gifting an e-reader is a great idea. Not only is it portable which means children can read anywhere such as the car, the bus or when visiting grandma, but you can literally load hundreds of books onto just one device.
This means that your child can take their favorite books everywhere with them without needing a suitcase to lug them around. And, we all know that books can become our friends and have them close gives children an added sense of security when they are aware from home.
Anyone with young children will tell you just how tech-savvy kids are nowadays. They are born instinctively knowing how to swipe, download, upload and more; so an e-reader is a gadget that combines all the whiz-bang techie stuff and books as well.
Taking Time to Read Together is Important for Bonding
The most important reason why you should be giving books this year, however, is because you can read and share them with these very important small people.
The children in your life will cherish those times when you both discovered the magic of books. They will always remember how you both laughed at the crazy antics of the characters or hid behind the sofa cushions when the big bad wolf appeared.
Create wonderful memories cuddled up together sharing lovely stories about dogs, cats, or cheeky monkeys living in Africa.
Books are remarkably powerful tools that bring so much joy to our lives. They will outlast all toys; they don’t need batteries, and best of all they are not too expensive.
I can’t think of a better gift.
