For most of us, 5 days a week, 8 hours a day, we spend the majority of our time at our jobs. We make decisions every single day for our jobs and some of those decisions are even made outside of the office. While it can be the decision to work from home or work in the office that day, other decisions include what you’re going to wear to work today. As building your professional wardrobe can take time, it can be easy to forget about the importance of regularly upgrading and updating your wardrobe.

Whether you need a large upgrade or are just interested in making little changes to your outfits, here are some ways to keep your professional wardrobe continuously amazing.

1. Reflect on your style

Reflect on your style

Before you make any changes or adjustments to your wardrobe, it’s important to take a step back and do an overall reflection on your style in general. Styles can often change and what you wore two years ago might not be what you wear now.

Since it’s easier to gauge our style through our casual clothes rather than our work clothes, look through everything in your closet and figure out where your style now falls. Doing so will make it easier to upgrade your wardrobe, including exactly what aspects of your wardrobe you want to make changes too. Is it your choice in pieces altogether? Is it patterns that you want to experiment with more? Figuring out where you currently are will make it easier to determine where it is you want your style to go.

2. Donate old items no longer in use

Donate old items no longer in use

After you’ve done a bit of reflection on your style, you’ll be easily able to sort out the clothes you still want from the ones that you’ll no longer wear. If you’re having trouble deciding on what to let go of, think back to the last time you took that piece of clothing out of your closet. If it’s been more than a year since you’ve worn it or it no longer fits, it might be time to let it go. To help keep track of what pieces you wear the most, put your clothes in your closet with the hanger reversed. Every time you wear something, you can hang the item back up with the hanger facing the right direction. At the end of the year, you’ll be able to easily see which pieces of clothing you wear more than others.

Once you have sorted out the ones you’re no longer in need of, instead of letting them just take space in your closet, make the effort in donating your used clothing. Not only will this make you feel better about helping to eliminate extra waste in the world but it will give others a chance to shop for clothes they might feel are perfect for them. Another possible idea is hosting a clothing swap party. Chances are you’re not the only one with clothes you’re looking to get rid of so hosting a swap party with friends and family is a great way to get together and possibly find some of your work essentials for next to nothing.

3. Slowly buy new items

Just as Rome wasn’t built in a day, you can’t accomplish a whole new wardrobe within a day either. Make a plan to identify the items that you want and then slowly integrate them into your wardrobe. As hard as it might seem, don’t go on a large shopping spree immediately as you’ll likely end up overspending. Depending on how many items you decide that you need will also decide how much money you may be willing to spend to get them more quickly.

With Thanksgiving and Christmas coming up, we can expect to see plenty of sales coming our way AKA the perfect time to find some of those items you’ve been wanting to include. The first opportunity being Black Friday and the second being all the sales on winter clothing once January comes. With these sales quickly approaching, it will be the perfect opportunity to add some of those must-have pieces into your wardrobe. Of course, if you don’t want to spend the money then use the opportunity of the holidays and gift-giving to make actual gift wish lists out of your clothing wish lists. Whether it’s the actual item you want or just a gift card to the store you’re planning on going to, this is a great way to accomplish a new wardrobe while not spending any of your own money.

4. Invest in what you currently own

Invest in what you currently own

If you’re on a tight budget or aren’t in the mood to go shopping, instead make the effort in investing in pieces you already own. Doing little things like adding accessories, layering or mixing and matching unexpected pieces are all ways that you can play up your wardrobe that’ll cost you next to nothing.

If there are pieces within your closet that are worse for wear, you can make adjustments to those as well. Whether a favorite shirt of yours has a hole in it or an outdated blouse could use some freshening, consider DIYing your clothes so that you can take your overall wardrobe from drab to fab!

5. Accessorize

Accessorize

If you feel as if you’re closet is already perfect the way it is but you regularly go to work feeling as if your outfit is missing something, lack of accessories might be the problem. Adding accessories to your outfits like a scarf or a belt can do wonders to make your outfit feel complete. Or if you want to take your look from casual to slightly nicer, add a pair of oversized earrings or a nice necklace.

With the cold weather here, the accessory you might be missing is a comfy but stylish cardigan and/or hat. Whether you need to update your accessories or have some that haven’t been worn in a while, just adding one to two accessories will make a huge difference in your wardrobe and will make for a large upgrade in your overall style.
