As your professional mentor, we always look for meaningful career advice which is devoid of any technicality.  We will introduce you to some of the biggest career-limiting habits that can actually help you step up the ladder of your career.

Successful habits are unflinchingly common ones found in all impactful professionals and entrepreneurs.

1.Avoid Changing Designation

Don’t Switch Steams Frequently

The first tip is NOT to flip to a different position when you are making a job change. Everyone would be executing few duties that are intersecting with professionals who are one level upward or downward in the process of an industry.

This essentially inherits some hands-on skills with beginner level but each position has USP attached to it.

In simple words, take for example, if you are a top-notch JavaScript developer, switching to PHP domain in a different group for sake of money can prove to be fatal.  So clinch to your own domain and try improving your skills.

2. Set Priorities and Goals, do NOT Overlook Order

Set Priorities and Goals, do NOT Overlook Order

Make a list of priorities of the day in written format.  Plan your day accordingly. The tasks of the day must be outlined with the most important and urgent ones designated with high priority.

Likewise, determine your short-term and long-term goals and evaluate your progress yearly, half-yearly or quarterly.

Please don’t keep too many objectives within a short span of time or do NOT try to bind self with tight deadlines that are difficult to achieve. The daily schedule should be in control and spare some buffer time to adjust with urgent tasks that may come anytime.

3. Avoid Getting Personal with your Team

Of course, this does NOT mean to become a dormant employee, indifferent of the requirements and goals of your team. If you are fortunate enough to get fully technical expert and industry standard teammate, try to absorb as much possible as you can. This will help you learn to handle the situation with insightful tricks of the trade.

If management of the company is supportive, they mostly would arrange seminars to boost employees’ personality development, communication skills, entail to develop leadership skills which are essential soft skills for anyone to grow in life and career.

Avoid getting too close or friendly.  They may take you for granted. So be supporting, honest and reliable but professional too understanding a fine line between personal and professional limitations.

4.Avoid Staying Isolated

Avoid Staying Isolated

Staying aloof with the activities of your organization is not possible. While working in a team you have to collaborate with your team members which are part of the same line of business. You need to know what’s out there, and for that, you have to build a network.

Apart from offline contact, nowadays there are several resources on social media and professional marketplace sites like Facebook, relevant groups on LinkedIn, etc. to stay connected. All these will help you stay updated and understand them all well! Mingle with them and let them feel you’re one of them.

5. Avoid Getting too Specialized

Avoid Getting too Specialized

“Although this is the most current trend in the modern world, don’t be the kind of professional that is reliable only in specific situations where a specific expertise is required, which you are proficient in.

For instance, a database specialist should get hands on a handful of database products from diversified vendors as opposed to mastery in a single product of one vendor. The core is you should have basic knowledge of all the aspects of your domain other than your own. Nobody likes those people who are not ready to share additional responsibilities. But you need to know how to handle work pressure too!

Getting too specialized and specific can narrow down your significance as a professional. It lessens the number of opportunities you might explore. I do not say you should know everything but at least you can put efforts to learn something new every day. Manage your time and efforts to the right direction. You need to manage yourself professionally. It will broaden your career avenues. So friends, develop expertise without losing versatility.  Be versatile without losing ground of your core expertise. This will lead you to the path of personal and professional development.
